Week 4: Uses for Evernote

This has been by far the most difficult thing to do for me. It took me hours to be able to get it done since I was clueless. I literally had to watch the video at least 6 times to be able to know what to do. I am not technology savvy at all, but I’m sure my students would have no problem using it, since they were born into this new era of technology.
After I finally knew how to use it I realized what an amazing tool it is! I believe students in middle school and high school would benefit the most from it, since they are older.
If I could use it in my classroom, (2nd grade classroom ).  I would use it to go digital with all the textbooks. One of my biggest pet peeves is the amount of space these take up in my classroom. I would have all of these in digital format so they could access it from their computer.
Another object that takes up a lot of space is the composition books we use. Instead of using the paper and pencil I would have student make their own notebooks online. They would create one notebook per subject area: social studies, science, language arts, reading, and math. I could make my mini lesson and have them use evernote to store their notes.
I loved the feature of the recorder. I wish someone would have told me about this app/website when I started college. I would have saved a lot of time! An idea that I would try to implement in the classroom would have our students be the “teacher” of the subject. I would have them each make audio presentations. We would have a notebook for this project as a class where they could just drop the audio. Everyone would have access to each other’s recording. I know my class would love to be “teacher” for one day.
As a teacher, evernote would be very useful. I would it to store all my lesson plans. Every Friday we have to upload the lesson plans to a shared drive at our campus. At the end of the year part of the checkout is having all lesson plans online. Unfortunately, something always goes wrong and lesson plans are miraculesly lost. This took up a long time to clarify. Having evernote would facilitate as a Plan B  in case this ever happens.

Despite the difficulties I had when I started this assignment I realized how amazing and convenient this is. It saves a lot of time and you have everything at your fingertips. I loved it, since I am prone to lose everything. I know my students would be amazed at being able to do it. I have found a lot of great ideas, but unfortunately my school lacks the technology to implement it.

  1. Pattsy,

If this is new to you, don’t stress over it and just take it a little at a time. Technology can be very confusing and frustrating, and sometimes even the most tech savvy people get stuck sometimes. My suggestion to you, is to not start creating complex things if you are not comfortable with it, do it a little at a time, and I say that because I learned the hard way. Since you have second graders, I would maybe start by integrating pictures of flashcards into Evernote so that the students can blend words or maybe put in some math equations and have the students write it on a piece of paper. And as you start feeling more secure with the program, then you can implement more into the classroom.

  2. Pattsy I love the idea of using this tool for the Composition notebooks, poor children, since most schools do not use the lockers they have to be carrying around so many heavy books and notebooks, your idea of using electronic books and notebooks will help alleviate some of that weight on their backs. Don't worry Pattsy about not being very tech savvy, all gets easier with practice, and I am sure once you begin to use these tools, your students will be happy to help you learn from them!

  3. Hi Pattsy,
I like your idea about using Evernote instead of composition notebooks for all content area notebooks. I think that not only would teachers but parents like this idea. A lot of times the students are not able to bring in the notebooks at the beginning of the school year because parents were not able to purchase them due to financial situations or because they could not find them at the stores. Evernote is a good solution for this.

  4. Hi Pattsy,

You know that teachers receive a lot of pressure thru administrative tasks, assessment and reporting demands, but if we use Evernote as an assistant we can store student assessment notes, lesson plans and administrative tasks within the app. At the end teachers can get more time to spend with students, and this time is what directly impacts on the student learning.

    1. Hello Patsy,
I have to completely agree with you. This assignment was very difficult for me too. There have been many times when I wonder why technology is so difficult for me. It takes me more than one try to understand a task, and at times still not understand what I am doing. It amazes me how students can pick up on new app and programs almost like second nature. I'm just glad we were exposed to something new and we were able to do it! That's something to celebrate!

  5. Pattsy,

Thank you for sharing your ideas for how you would implement Pinterest in the educational setting. Much like you, I am also crazy over Pinterest as well as TeachersPayTeachers. :o) :o) :o) Both of these websites have such great ideas and great resources that are easily accessible to anyone involved in education. I also use Pinterest for researching and gathering ideas for future and upcoming lessons. Thanks again for sharing your great ideas. :o)

    All the best. :o)
